About Reality-Based Personal Protection system
Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection will not only teach you the most up-to-date police, military, security, bodyguard, martial arts, and counterterrorism techniques and training methods accepted globally to deal with modern conflict situations, but Jim Wagner also teaches what no other civilian systems are teaching: Pre-Conflict and Post-Conflict training - what to do before a conflict and after one, in addition to Conflict training.
Learning life protecting techniques are easy. You can learn directly from Jim Wagner through courses and seminars offered worldwide, or you can learn through our DVDs, books, and other Reality-Based Personal Protection educational materials – all found on our online store.
What makes our system different?
There are three distinct branches in the martial arts, and they are
Traditional-based martial arts Sport-based martial arts Reality-Based martial arts. So, how do you know what is right for you?
Traditional-based systems, such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung-fu, and others, are ancient systems that adhere to ancient techniques and training methods. They typically wear uniforms, have a belt ranking system, and require their students to learn foreign customs, traditions and terminology. Found within these systems are fundamental self-defense principals, but they are not structured to teach students modern criminal and terrorism situations such as bombings, armed robberies, drive-by shootings, carjackings, gang violence, threat assessment, etc.
Sport-based systems, such as Ju-Jitsu, Judo, Greco-Roman Wrestling, Western boxing, and others, have their roots in traditional-based martial arts, but adhere to sporting rules in order to compete in various tournaments, sporting events, or even the Olympics. Like the traditional-base martial arts, viable self-defense techniques and training methods can be gleaned from sport-based systems as well, but also like the traditional-based systems they also lack many modern conflict solutions.
Reality-based systems are those systems that teach the fundamental self-defense techniques that are found in both the traditional-based and sport-based systems, but go a step further by training specifically for modern conflict situations, and eliminating outdated techniques and training methods. Although there are many systems today calling themselves “reality-based,” because they see themselves as training more realistically and have abandoned nonessential customs and traditions, few of them are actually “complete reality-based” systems. In other words, they lack Pre-Conflict and Post-Conflict training in their curriculums and their Conflict training may be lacking simply because they have no real-world experience with criminals, abnormals, or terrorism.
Jim Wagner was not only the first instructor to articulate that there are these three distinct branches in the martial arts, but he was the first instructor to tie Pre-Conflict, Conflict, and Post-Conflict training together into one system. Just pick up any martial arts magazine dated 1998 or earlier, and you will find virtually no police, military, criminal, terrorism, or reality-based articles within those pages. Through his writings, starting with Black Belt magazine (USA) and Budo magazine (Europe), Jim Wagner opened up the flood gates, and now you see a movement towards more realistic self-defense training and a whole new classification of advertisers in every martial arts magazine globally.
What exactly is the Reality-Based Personal Protection system?
Jim Wagner left full-time law enforcement and formed the civilian version of his system. Thus, on January 21, 2003 this revolutionary system was officially born.
The definition of the term Reality-Based as defined by Jim Wagner is:
Training and survival skills based on modern conflict situations that the practitioner is likely to encounter in their environment (their “reality”), in an accordance with the use-of-force continuum of that jurisdiction.
The Jim Wagner Reality-Based Personal Protection system is the world’s original reality-based system, not just because Jim Wagner coined the term for the civilian martial arts, but because it is the very first system to include Pre-Conflict, Conflict, Post-Conflict and the creation of the very first civilian use-of-force continuum graph.
Pre-Conflict training is the foundation for all of our courses which includes, Threat Assessment, Situational Awareness, Conflict Cues (reading a person for hostilities), the O.O.D.A. process, legal issues, criminal counter-surveillance, knowing the Assault Elements, Threat Zone Management, Conflict Conditioning (mentally and physically, training documentation, and much more.
Post-Conflict training are those actions immediately following a physical conflict, such as Self-Triage and Combat First Aid, victim rescues, citizen’s arrest methods, Incident Recollection, evidence identification and preservation, police contact, the Conflict Cycle, courtroom survival, and the list goes on.
Conflict training is where we go way beyond what any other self-defense system teaches. Our techniques come from the world’s elite police, military, corrections, and security units, which ultimately ties into an understanding of criminal and terrorist tactics. We’ll teach you what few instructors are qualified to teach: defense against terrorist bombings and small arms attacks, criminal style stabbings, carjackings, drive-by shootings, kidnappings, sexual assault, armed robbery, criminal chemical attacks, gang violence, school and workplace massacres, child abductions, sniper attacks – just to name a few. Of course you’ll learn all the strikes, blocks, and movements common to other systems, but only those techniques that will actually work in the streets or the battlefield. That’s right – battlefield. Although this is a civilian personal protection system, police and military personnel often attend these courses simply because much of what we teach is not even taught in many units and agencies, or in such a comprehensive manner.
It doesn’t take years to learn real self-defense. It takes days.
“War arts.” That’s the literal meaning of the words “martial arts.”

Triunity:
We at Triunity feel that it is important to implement an awareness towards not only (Traditional self defense) techniques but also to enhance on the more reality based aspects of personal protection in a much simpler yet effective way. In Jim's words "it should not take a student years to learn self defense, it should only take days"
Women need to be more aware of their surroundings and not just on a physical level but also we need to pay more attention to our "inner voice". Once we have created the awareness in the women in our community on the importance of "women's safety", and how a few simple reality based self-defense tactics could ultimately help save their lives. We will then provide them with the physical and the mental tools they will need in order to act and therefore react in any and all life threatening situations.
Our goal in our community is to provide a service where women, children and men can learn these simple tactics in a safe and challenging environment.
Mitra Castano

Level 1 These courses are open to anyone wanting to learn self-defense or anyone wanting to become a Level 1 certified instructor. To become a certified instructor you must complete all five courses. However, you do not have to take them all in one week, or in order. Each course is approximately 8 hours. You may finish the courses you are not able to take at a future seminar anywhere in the world
Defensive Tactics Mon August 17th 2009 In a real fight you are going to rely on only a handful of simple, gross motor skills, strikes and blocks to survive. This course will literally teach you, step-by-step, everything you need to know, using every part of your body, for empty hand conflict; the same techniques taught to Special Forces soldiers, SWAT operators, prison guards, and security forces personnel. It doesn’t matter if you are a black belt, U.S. Navy SEAL, or a beginner, this course will simplify physical conflict like you’ve never seen before. This course also covers Threat Zones, use-of-force legal issues, Threat Assessment, Situational Awareness, and Conflict Rehearsals. In this revolutionary course you’ll learn that there are only 10 primary directions to move in any given tactical situation, 10 ways to strike someone, 10 blocks. You’ll hear about concepts unknown in most self-defense system such as the Piston Concept, Stopping Power, Chase Instinct, training documentation, Kinetic Sensation Response, and much more.
Ground Survival Tuesday. August 18th 2009 The ground is the last place you want to be during a fist fight or a knife fight, because you give up mobility, visibility, and the conflict element of offense. On the other hand, if someone is shooting at you, the ground can be used to your tactical advantage, and we’ll show you how in this easy-to-learn course. This course is anything but sport-based. It’s 100% modern tactics: how to hit the deck under gun fire, military style ground movement, victim rescue, using the ground as an impact weapon, subject takedowns, tackle defense, citizen arrest techniques, and dozens of other techniques that most police and military have not seen, let alone civilians. You’ll also learn all about the Clean Debris, the Fast Food Menu Concept, Ambush Survival, Positional Asphyxiation, Perceptual Distortion during conflict, and other reality-based concepts. The hands-on training includes multiple attacker situations while on the ground, escape techniques, less than ideal conflict positions, weapons factors, and the list goes on.
Knife Survival Wed. August 19th 2009 The knife is the most common weapon used by criminals, and the average knife attack lasts a mere 5 seconds. Defending yourself against this gruesome tool requires an understanding of how today’s prison inmates, criminals, terrorists, martial arts systems, and military units use them. This course is not a, “Come at me like this” course, but one that teaches you how to survive realistic full speed attacks from a brutal attacker. You’ll learn that there are only 10 directions someone can come at you with a knife, how to avoid being fatally stabbed at the initial moment of attack, what the 21 feet / 7 meter rule is all about and how it can save your life, the life-saving Jim Wagner Disarm Rule that is used by police, military, and prison personnel worldwide. To understand how to defend against a knife you need to know how to effectively use one yourself in a conflict situation. That’s why we will teach you the proper grip, knife conflict drills that will take you from zero to advance in just 8 hours, and legal issues pertaining to knives in your area.
Crime Survival Thurs August 20th 2009 Personal protection is more than just learning how to defend yourself in the proverbial “bar fight.” Conflict today means learning how to survive a robbery, carjacking, gang violence, assault & battery, caustic chemical attacks, stun gun attacks, and other felonious attacks. You have to know more than just kicking and punching. You will be taught how criminals select their victims, how to detect a criminal surveillance and escape one, how to put yourself in the Position of Advantage in any environment, and most of all – how to be a “hard target.” However, we don’t stop there. We will educate you, through realistic Conflict Rehearsal on how to remember a suspect’s description, how to identify evidence and preserve a crime scene, what to say to the police, and courtroom survival. We’ll show you no-nonsense gun disarms at point blank range, and even how to survive a firearm when the distance makes a gun disarm impossible. Unlike other self-defense systems that teach you only to look out for yourself, we’ll teaching you the latest bodyguard tactics in how to protect others, like your loved ones who may be with during a crisis situation. We’ll also cover vehicle security, home security, and stuff you just won’t see in any other martial arts training.
Terrorism Survival Friday August 21st 2009 What would you do if you were caught in the middle of a hand grenade attack, or if a co-worker snaps and goes on a shooting spree, or you find yourself in the middle of a Serin gas attack by terrorists on a plane, train, or bus? In this course you are going to learn by doing. You’re going to experience realistic terrorist attacks and learn the techniques to increase your chances of survival. Such a comprehensive, hands-on, course is rare among law enforcement agencies and military units, and thus, virtually non-existent in civilian self-defense schools. There are few self-defense instructors in the world who have been on a counterterrorist team, but Jim Wagner, the founder of the Reality-Based Personal Protection system, has – for the United States government after 9/11; not to mention being a trained sniper, firearms and CQB instructor, as well as training with counterterrorist teams in Israel, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Spain. In this intense 8 hour program you will learn countersniper survival, dealing with a bomb threat, detecting a suicide bomber, kidnapping avoidance, hostage survival tips, travel precautions, home invasions, and school or office massacres.
